I am a FIRE Starter because...my unyielding goal for the next three years at Notre Dame is to establish, to the best of my ability, a community of openness, respect, and safety, where anyone can express their sexuality and their view towards gender and sexuality without fear of being attacked or degraded for deviance from normality.  I want to promote understanding, knowledge, and a willingness to delve deeper into the sexual-societal structures that engulf our lives.  My desire is to spark an interest and drive in the student body to confront the issues of gender and sexuality in their lives.

I am a FIRE Starter because... I want to be a force of positive change for the University of Notre Dame.  The FIRE Starters work with issues (sexual assault, eating disorders, gender relations, etc.) that are extremely relevant to our campus and through our work, we are able to raise awareness and improve our community.

Megan Carey

I am a FIRE Starter because...I believe in human goodness. If every person treated themselves and others with warmth and kindness, the world would be ablaze with genuine love.  As a FIRE starter, I hope to feed the flames by reminding myself and others of the need for empathy, compassion, and respect.

I am a FIRE Starter because...Everyone should feel safe and at home at Notre Dame. Opening minds and creating a space for intelligent discussion is one of the main purposes of higher education, making our presence on campus not only helpful, but necessary.

Residence: Siegfried Hall
Major: African Studies/Peace Studies
Email: acoccia@nd.edu
I am a FIRE Starter because...In order to spark open discussion, dialogue, acceptance, and understanding one must share the passion in one’s heart. I believe that presenting constructive ideas in creative ways to foster progress in social norms, especially in the ways we understand gender, will lead to a safer and more welcoming campus environment.

Asami Floyd

Class: 2013
Hometown: Ocala, FL
Residence: Off Campus
Major: Japanese, Arts and Letters Pre-Professional
Email: afloyd2@nd.edu
I am a FIRE Starter because... I enjoy discussing issues that are often avoided in normal conversation. Since coming to Notre Dame, I feel many people turn the other way when topics such as sexual violence, gays and lesbians, and pre-marital pregnancies are brought up. Although I respect Notre Dame’s Catholic identity, I am not afraid to discuss these things openly.

Cody Gaffney
Cody Gaffney

Residence: Keough Hall
Major: Theology
Email: cgaffney@nd.edu
I am a FIRE Starter because... I see the gender issues that Notre Dame faces–issues like sexual assault, homophobia, and eating disorders– and I want to be a part of the dialogue and a part of the solution to these issues.
