The Gender Relations Center offers student leadership opportunities in three different avenues: Firestarters, Program Assistants, and Senior Fellows.

Firestarters

Firestarters are volunteer peer educators and student leaders who help plan GRC programs. Once admitted, Firestarters will be assigned to a group within one of our three topic areas, led by two paid student employees. Having fulfilled the below expectations, Firestarter members will receive compensation of $200.00 at the end of each semester. 

Expectations

  • Represent the mission, vision, and values of the GRC.
  • Help plan and execute educational programs and events ‍within their respective groups.
  • Attend 75% of their group’s events and programs.
  • Attend 50% of GRC meetings, which are divided into two categories: large group meetings with the entire Firestarter cohort and smaller group meetings. These meetings take place at 9:00 p.m. on Mondays.
  • Attend two GRC events that are outside of their group.

Program Assistants

Program Assistants design and implement GRC programming in the areas of Authenticity and Identity, Relationships, and Allyship and Accompaniment. Program Assistants will work up to 8 hours a week and will co-lead a Firestarter group with a Senior Fellow.

Position Description

Each academic year, the GRC has four Program Assistant positions available for our Firestarter groups. Program Assistants should be rising sophomores or juniors, but can be rising seniors if the applicant expresses strong interest. They will schedule 6 hours of work per week within the office (but can work up to 8) and are paid $16.00/hour. Program Assistants must be available from 8:00 p.m. - 10:00 p.m. on Mondays and may be asked to move in early and participate in Welcome Weekend activities. Ideally, applicants will have been involved in the GRC prior to becoming a Program Assistant.

Expectations

  • Represent the mission, vision, and values of the GRC as a student employee.
  • Function as the top-level leadership cohort in the GRC.
  • Lead planning efforts for their focus area's signature month.
  • Conduct GRC workshops in the residence halls. 

Senior Fellows

Senior Fellows design and implement GRC programming in the areas of Authenticity and Identity, Relationships, and Allyship and Accompaniment. The GRC Senior Fellows program is an opportunity for senior student leaders to engage the campus in respectful dialogue while helping to build a community that fully honors the human dignity of each person. Senior Fellows will work up to 10 hours a week and will co-lead a Firestarter group with a Program Assistant. 

Each academic year, the GRC has four Senior Fellow positions available for our Firestarter groups. Senior Fellowships are open to all members of the class of 2027 living on campus for the duration of the 2026-27 academic year. They will schedule 6 hours of work per week within the office (but can work up to 10) and will receive an annual stipend of $4,500.00. Senior Fellows must be available from 8:00 p.m. - 10:00 p.m. on Mondays and may be asked to move in early and participate in Welcome Weekend activities. Ideally, applicants will have been involved in the GRC or GRC adjacent spaces prior to becoming a Senior Fellow.
